File checksum
Calculate SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 locally.
How it works
- Choose or drop your files
- Select “Calculate checksum” and let your browser process it
- Review the result and download it to your device
Why use FileTools for file checksum?
A checksum is a deterministic fingerprint calculated from file bytes. Comparing the result with a value published by a trusted source can reveal an incomplete or altered download.
Best suited for
Verifying software downloads, comparing file copies, checking transfers, and documenting file integrity.
Input and output
Input: Any local file plus SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512.
Output: A hexadecimal digest that can be copied and compared.
Known limitation
A matching hash proves byte equality with the reference, not that the reference itself is trustworthy or safe.
Practical tips
- SHA-256 is the most commonly published option for ordinary download verification.
- Compare every character and obtain the expected hash from a trusted channel separate from the file when possible.
